Jackson was partly right. More than $100 million in gold would be lifted from the south fork of Clear Creek, but he did not gain the riches he had imagined. In May, he returned with some friends to the area. In six days, they panned out $1,900 worth of gold. Soon after, Jackson sold his portion of the claim for a very small sum.

Jackson’s discovery wasn’t the first in the Rocky Mountain area. Tiny flakes of gold had been seen in these parts for a few years. The joint discoveries of the Comstock Lode and Clear Creek seemed to signal the start of a mad dash by more than one hundred thousand prospectors to the Colorado area. Hordes of experienced miners traveled from California, and thousands of novices poured in from the East. The rallying cry was “Pike’s Peak or Bust”—named after the landmark mountain nearby.
